SI La conjunción si se puede traducir al inglés por if o whether; si no se traduce por if not o unless. Si ► Por regla general, si se traduce al inglés por if en las oraciones condicionales y por whether o if en las dubitativas: Si me has mentido te arrepentirás If you have lied to me you'll regret it Si tuviera mucho dinero me compraría un caballo If I had lots of money, I'd buy myself a horse No sé si me dejará quedarme I don't know whether o if he'll let me stay ► Si se puede traducir solo por whether, y nunca por if, cuando se presentan dos opciones a elegir, cuando va detrás de una preposición, delante de un infinitivo o de una oración interrogativa indirecta: No sé si ir a Canadá o a Estados Unidos I can't decide whether to go to Canada or the United States Quiero que hablemos de si deberíamos mandar a los niños a un colegio interno I want to talk to you about whether we should send the children to boarding school Todavía no tenemos muy claro si vamos a mudarnos o no We still haven't made up our minds about whether to move or not ► Las oraciones del tipo si hubieras hecho algo... se pueden traducir, en un registro más culto, omitiendo la partícula if e invirtiendo el orden del sujeto y el verbo auxiliar: Si hubieras estado aquí esto no habría ocurrido Had you been here this would not have happened Si no ► Si no generalmente se traduce al inglés por if not aunque, cuando en español se puede reemplazar por a no ser que, se puede utilizar también unless y cuando equivale a de lo contrario se emplea preferentemente otherwise o or else: Iría al cine más a menudo si no fuera tan caro I would go to the cinema more often if it weren't so expensive No te puedes quedar aquí si no pagas el alquiler You can't stay here unless you pay your rent o You can't stay here if you don't pay your rent Tenemos que estar allí antes de las diez; si no, vamos a tener problemas We must be there by ten, otherwise o or else we'll be in trouble ► Las oraciones del tipo si no hubieras hecho algo... se pueden traducir, en un registro más culto, omitiendo la partícula if e invirtiendo el orden del sujeto y el verbo auxiliar: Si no hubiese robado el dinero, ahora no estaría en la cárcel Had he not stolen the money, he wouldn't be in prison now Para otros usos y ejemplos ver la entrada II¡pero si eres tú! no te había reconocido — oh, it's you, I didn't recognize you!

= had I known he was in Rome... - Quando, dopo verbi come to ask, to know, to wonder ecc., se introduce un'interrogativa indiretta o una dubitativa, la traduzione è if oppure whether, quest'ultimo usato specialmente se lo stile è più formale o se viene esplicitata l'alternativa se... o: non so se lo sa = I don't know if he knows; mi chiedo se l'abbia fatto o meno = I wonder whether he did it or not. = unless you tell me at once...1 (condizionale) if; se telefona, digli che non ci sono if he phones, tell him I'm not in; se vuoi vengo con te I'll come with you if you like; se fossi in te o al tuo posto if I were you; sarei contento se piovesse I would be happy if it rained2 (causativo) se lo sapevi perché non me l'hai detto? since you knew, why didn't you tell me? se proprio insisti, vengo if you insist, I'll come3 (concessivo) if; se anche, anche se even if, even though; è furbo, anche se non sembra he's sly although he doesn't look it4 (in frasi esclamative) if; se (solo o almeno) lo avessi saputo! if only I had known! had I known! se Dio vuole! = is it their son/car?; c'est grave? = is it serious?; c'est toi ou ton frère? = is it you or your brother? = is that clear?; qui est-ce? = will you be (coming) with us?; êtes-vous des nôtres? = are you coming with us? (ici, coming est nécessaire, pour éviter l'ambiguïté de are you with us?); les journalistes ne sont pas/ne seront pas du voyage = the journalists aren't coming/won't be coming on the trip; ils ont organisé une expédition mais je n'en étais pas = they organized an expedition but I wasn't part of it; il y avait un congrès mais il n'en était pas = there was a congress but he didn't take partSuivi d'un infinitif et précédé de noms abstraits avec l'article défini ( l'idéal, l'essentiel etc) ou de superlatifs ( le plus simple), être de se traduit généralement par to be suivi de l'infinitif avec to: le plus simple serait de tout recommencer = the simplest thing to do would be to start all over again* * *ɛtʀ1. nm2. vb (avec attribut)1) (état, description) to beIl est instituteur. — He's a teacher.

Indicative/Subjunctive after "si"
Si can be followed by both the {indicative} and the {subjunctive}. The {indicative} describes facts and likely situations; the {subjunctive} describes remote or hypothetical situations.
Indicative ► Use si + ((present indicative)) to translate if + ((present)) in English:
If you go on overeating, you'll get fat Si sigues comiendo tanto, vas a engordar
Don't do it if you don't want to No lo hagas si no quieres NOTE: Don't use si with the ((present subjunctive)).
Subjunctive ► Use si + ((imperfect subjunctive)) to translate if + ((past)) for remote or uncertain possibilities and hypotheses:
If we won the lottery, we would never have to work again Si nos tocase or tocara la lotería, no tendríamos que trabajar nunca más
What would you do if I weren't here? ¿Qué harías si yo no estuviese or estuviera aquí? ► Use si + ((pluperfect subjunctive)) (= hubiera or hubiese + ((past participle))) to translate if + had + ((past participle)):
If Paula hadn't lost her ticket, she would have left today Si Paula no hubiera or hubiese perdido el billete, habría salido hoy Alternatively, instead of a clause with si, you can often use de ( no) haber + ((past participle)):
If Paula hadn't lost her ticket, she would have left today De no haber perdido Paula el billete, habría salido hoy For further uses and examples, see main entry* * *

19 Marten
Преследуя человека в чёрном, Роланд считал его Мартеном, хотя на самом деле это был сам Уолтер. man in black, Walter (I)My father had taken control, had been acknowledged and singled out. Marten was the acknowledger; my father was the mover. And his wife my mother, went to him, the connection between them. Betrayer.
“… but the two of them had some relationship, I think now. Maybe even half-brothers. Marten was a wizard… like Merlin.”
Walter (II)The gunslinger nodded. “Yar!” He paused. “When I was your age, I lived in a walled city, did I tell you that?” / The boy shook his head sleepily. / “Sure. And there was an evil man—” / “The priest?” / “Well, sometimes I wonder about that, tell you true,” the gunslinger said. “If they were two, I think now they must have been brothers. Maybe even twins. But did I ever see ‘em together? No, I never did. This bad man… this Marten… he was a wizard. Like Merlin. Do they ken Merlin where you come from?”
